Choosing a Portfolio Theme for Your Work

The biggest mistake in portfolio theme selection is picking something visually loud and letting it compete with your actual work. A photographer's site and a UX designer's site need very different things from the same "portfolio" label. Photographers usually want large, uninterrupted image space, fast lightbox galleries, and minimal chrome around each shot. Designers and agencies often need room to explain process, not just show a finished image, which means case-study templates matter more than gallery density.

Before buying, check how the theme handles image loading. A portfolio full of unoptimized full-resolution photos will kill your Core Web Vitals and, ironically, hurt how professional the site feels, since slow-loading work looks careless. Look for native lazy loading, WebP support, and a masonry or grid layout that degrades gracefully on mobile. If you are filtering by category rather than showing everything at once, confirm the filtering is fast and does not reload the whole page.
